The London Olympics 2012: Athletes Need Space to Grow
The Olympic Games is a major international event in which thousands of athletes participate in a variety of competitions, where more than 200 nations participate. Held every two years, with Summer and Winter Olympic Games alternating, the ancient Olympic Games were originally held in Olympia, Greece, from the 8th century BC to the 4th century AD. Baron Pierre de Coubertin founded the International Olympic Committee (IOC) in 1894. The evolution of the Olympic Movement during the 20th and 21st centuries has resulted in several changes to the Olympic Games. Some of these adjustments include the creation of the Winter Games for ice and winter sports, the Paralympic Games for athletes with a physical disability, and the Youth Olympic Games for teenage athletes. The growing importance of the mass media created the issue of corporate sponsorship and commercialization of the Games. The celebration of the Games encompasses many rituals and symbols, such as the Olympic flag and torch, as well as the opening and closing ceremonies. Over 13,000 athletes compete at the Summer and Winter Olympics in 33 different sports and nearly 400 events. The first, second, and third place finishers in each event receive Olympic medals: gold, silver, and bronze, respectively. The Games have grown in scale to the point that nearly every nation is represented. Every two years, the Olympics and its media exposure provide unknown athletes with the chance to attain national, and in particular cases, international fame. The Games also constitute a major opportunity for the host city and country to showcase itself to the world.
India in the Olympics
India first participated at the Olympic Games in 1900, with a lone athlete Norman Pritchard winning two medals in athletics. The Independent nation first sent a team to the Summer Olympic Games in 1920, and has participated in every Summer Games since then. India has also competed at several Winter Olympic Games since 1964. Indian athletes have won a total of 20 medals, mostly in field hockey. For a period of time, India’s men’s field hockey team was dominant in Olympic competition, winning eleven medals in twelve Olympiads between 1928 and 1980, including six successive gold medals from 1928–1956. The 2008 Summer Olympics has been the best ever Olympics for India with India winning three Olympic medals in three different sports and also winning first individual Olympic gold medal won by Abhinav Bindra. This year we have a number of contenders looking to bring back medals in their respective categories.
- Five-time world champion woman boxer MC Mary Kom (51kg) has qualified for the 2012 London Olympics. Women’s boxing will make its Olympic debut in three weight categories in London – 51kg, 60kg and 75kg. Asia has two slots in the 51kg division and Mary Kom has filled the second one after Asian Games gold-medalist Ren Cancan of China.
- Also in Boxing we have Vikas Krishan who has been hailed as the next big thing ever since he quit playing chess and started punching in 2003. His gold at the 2010 Asian Games announced his arrival, and his medal at the Worlds was a validation of his class. Vikas will most likely be the man to get India a boxing medal in London.
- Shiva Thapa’s career graph is hitting a peak as the Olympics approach. His disconcerting style makes him one of the smartest boxers on the circuit.
- Not to forget Vijender Singh who qualified for his third straight Olympics and this time, he says, a bronze will not be enough!
- Next up is Saina Nehwal, who has become a strong medal prospect after her dominating performance over the formidable Chinese players at the Indonesian Open.
- Abhinav Bindra still remains India’s biggest hope. Though another medal of any colour would be a huge achievement, Bindra won’t be satisfied with anything less than the gold he won four years ago.
- Ronjan Sodhi is Mr Consistent of the shooting world and is now the top-ranked double-trap shooter on the planet and may join Rajyavardhan Rathore who had made double-trap famous in India with his silver at Athens.
- Gagan Narang broke the world record in the 10m air rifle event and will once again be up against Abhinav Bindra, though he fancies his chances in the 50m 3-position and 50m prone events as well.
- The Women’s Archery team has three girls ranked as the second-best team in the world. In London they will face the Koreans, who have dominated archery events at the Olympics for several years now.
- Yogeshwar Dutt is returning from a career-threatening injury kept him away for over a year and fought the demons in his head to give his career a new lease of life, and that makes him India’s brightest wrestling hope in London.
- Mahesh Bhupathi and Rohan Bopanna will play as a team while Leander Paes is teamed with Vishnu Vardhan. While Paes (for whom it will be a record 6th Olympics) is unhappy with this teaming, he will partner Sania Mirza in the mixed doubles.
